Alive and Well (kind of) In Germany
Thursday, January 20, 2005

Of any hotel I have stayed at on any of my five trips to Europe, none even comes within a sniff of being as nice as the one which I am currently writing this article from. After a week in Italy my team traveled to Fischen, Germany to prepare for races at the site of the 2005 World Nordic Ski Championships in Oberstdorf, Germany, only 15 minutes down the road. Our accommodations are nestled amongst the mountains and overlook a beautiful valley and the small town of Fischen. The food here is 4-star all the way; fresh and homemade…you can almost taste the love!!

Unfortunately I have come down with a nasty illness that has kept me confined to my hotel room for the past 3 days. My first race on Sunday, a 10km skate race in Val de Fiemme, Italy did not go well at all, leading me to believe that I was fighting something leading into it. The day following the race I began to see symptoms that something was not right and upon arriving in Germany I knew that I was struggling with a cold of sorts. I decided that I would rest and attempt to recover rather than train and dig myself a deeper hole. Whatever I have come down with has now made its way into my lungs and has dropped a harsh, hacking cough on me. My energy is good, how can it not be after sitting in a hotel room for 2 days, but my lungs are in no shape to resume normal training. My first ski of the week was an hour effort today, just to test the waters, but the result was not encouraging. I am beginning to seriously doubt that I will be able to partake in the races this weekend; a 1.5km Classic Sprint on Saturday and a mass start 15km Skate on Sunday. I am not totally writing them off but having only 1 more day to get better and judging by my recent rate of recovery over the past 3 days….my chances look pretty slim.

And so I am continuing to rest, continuing to watch bad German TV and am getting close to finishing my 5th book of the trip, hoping that tomorrow will be a better dayJ
